3G (3rd Generation)
The overall term used for the next generation of mobile communications. 3G networks will offer higher capacity, quality and data rates than available today, and allow us to move towards mobile video on demand, streaming audio, high-speed multimedia, and mobile web access.
Bandwidth
Measures the data-carrying capacity of a communications channel. Usually measured in bits per second(bps).
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless technology specifically designed to enable infrared communication between small, mobile devices. Devices, such as laptops, phones, digital cameras, PDAs, even fridges, have to use Bluetooth technology in order to 'talk' to each other, but most manufacturers are currently working on installing Bluetooth so the concept of devices talking to themselves is not just an abstract vision of the future.
Dual band
Dual band mobile phones can work on networks operating different frequency bands. Often urban areas operate on 1800, while suburbs use the 900-band. This is especially useful if you travel abroad. Some phones are able to switch between GSM 900,1800,1900 (tri-band) allowing you full coverage in Europe, America and Asia.
GHz
Gigaherz - A frequency measurement. One hertz equals one cycle per second. GHz = One Billion hertz.
GPS
Global Position System. Based on US defence satellite system, enables tracking of individuals. This technology may prove helpful when navigating a car in the city, or help emergency rescue-team to locate the person in need of help.
GSM
The name of the standard on which the current networks operate
GPRS - General Packet Radio System.
The stepping stone between GSM and UMTS, and the upgrade of GSM, designed especially for internet usage. Is available now to corporate users, although consumers have to wait until next year. GPRS means that users are always connected, and instead of being charged per call, are charged for the amount of data that is transferred. The benefit over GSM/WAP is that voice calls can be made at the same time as internet browsing.
HDML
Hertz - radio frequency measurement (one hertz = one cycle per second).
Kbps (Kilobits per second)
A speed measurement for the transmitting of data (see BPS).
MB (Megabyte)
1 MB = 1024 kilobytes (KB)

Hypertext Markup Language
LCD
Liquid crystal display, such as the screen found on an i-Mode cellular phone used for reading emails and accessing the Internet.
Micro-browser
Client software designed to overcome challenges of mobile handheld devices that enables wireless access to services such as Internet information in combination with a suitable network server.
Navi-roller
The name given to the scrolling (ie navigating) device on mobile phones.
PDA
personal digital assistant. Usually a hand-held device, such as the Palm Pilot. WAP isn't just for cellular phones.

Roaming
Means that your mobile phone automatically sets up communication procedures with different radio base stations when you are on the move. International roaming means that you can use networks other than your own when travelling abroad. Some phones allow for example switching between 900/1800 in Europe to 1900 in US.
SMS (Short Message Service)
A service for sending messages of up to 160 characters to mobile phones that use Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication. GSM and SMS services are primarily available in Europe.
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System)
The name of the mobile networks that will replace the current GSM system in 2002
WAP
Wireless Application Protocol. The browser standard developed by Phone.com and supported by the majority of the mobile industry.
WAP Gateway
A WAP gateway is a two-way software. Its main function is to offload the WAP mobile device from a lot of computational layers.
WAP Server
A WAP server is a web server. The computer programmers use WML instead of HTML.
WISP  -  WAP Internet Service Provider
A company that provides access to WAP content on the internet.
WML
Wireless Markup Language (the format HTML pages have to be converted to in order for WAP phones to access them).
WMLScript
Scripting language for WAP devices. Based on JavaScript, but less powerful.
WSP
Wireless Session Protocol. Provides the upper-level application layer of WAP with a consistent interface for two session services, a connection-mode service that operates above a transaction layer protocol, and a connectionless service that operates above a secure or non-secure datagram transport service.
WTLS
Wireless Transport Layer Security. The "equivalent" to SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) widely used in the HTML world - although not identical in functionality.
WTP
Wireless Transaction Protocol
XML
Extensible Markup Language. W3C s standard for Internet Markup Languages. WML is one of these languages.
